Golden Boot Winner!
Golden Boot Winner Donavan Thompson.
Donavan Thompson reaffirmed his status as one of the Premier Division’s most prolific strikers after finishing as the league’s top scorer for the second time in three years.
The X-Roads Warriors player netted 18 goals to claim the coveted golden boot and more importantly help his team retain their top-flight status for next season.
“I am definitely happy to win my second golden boot in the Premier Division,” Thompson told The Royal Gazette.
“It got easier having a team and a coach that really believed in me.
“Ralph Bean Jr [X-Roads head coach] said his money was always on me and it felt good coming from someone that was a top striker during his era.
“I believe I have one of the best coaches in Bermuda because he is has won golden boots and trophies.”
Thompson was pipped by Simmons for the title on the final day of the 2015-16 and 2018-19 seasons playing for Hamilton Parish and his first season with X-Roads.
He finally earned a maiden golden boot with 13 goals during the 2019-20 campaign that was cut short owing to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The season got cut short but everyone still got awards for it,” Thompson said.
Having added to his growing legacy, Thompson has now set himself new goals to strive for before calling time on a sparkling career.
The 28-year-old hopes to get his hands on a trophy and eclipse the record for the most goals in a season set by former Somerset Trojans, Somerset Eagles, Hotels International and Bermuda winger Coolridge “Bumla” Bell, who scored 35 times during the 1978-79 campaign.
“My dream is to win a title and beat Bumla Bell’s record, which I honesty believe I can achieve,” Thompson added.
“I am going to keep striving for it because I honesty believe I can do it.
“It is a big deal to me because I want to be known as one of the best strikers to play in Bermuda and be listed as one of the greats.”
